The answer

Use when the user asks how to build with OpenAI products or APIs, asks about Codex itself or choosing Codex surfaces, needs up-to-date official documentation...

Install

mkdir -p .codex/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/openai/skills.git /tmp/openai-skills
cp -R /tmp/openai-skills/skills/.curated/openai-docs .codex/skills/openai-docs

Author's take / 作者点评

Useful OpenAI docs lookup skill when fetch works. For API implementers; expect occasional 403 on raw HTTP and retry via browser tools.

查 OpenAI 文档有用;部分环境裸 HTTP 会 403,需改用浏览器/WebFetch。

What it does

Use when the user asks how to build with OpenAI products or APIs, asks about Codex itself or choosing Codex surfaces, needs up-to-date official documentation with citations, help choosing the latest model for a use case, or model upgrade and prompt-upgrade guidance; use OpenAI docs MCP tools for non-Codex docs questions, use the Codex manual helper first for broad Codex self-knowledge, and restrict fallback browsing to official OpenAI domains.

This entry summarizes the public skill for discovery. Prefer the upstream SKILL.md for the full instruction text (we do not paste restricted or lengthy proprietary prompt bodies).

Install & usage

Codex

Inside Codex, use the skill installer (repo is deprecated as a catalog but curated skills remain usable):

$skill-installer openai-docs

Or copy from GitHub:

mkdir -p .codex/skills
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/openai/skills.git /tmp/openai-skills
cp -R /tmp/openai-skills/skills/.curated/openai-docs .codex/skills/openai-docs

Restart Codex after install so it discovers the skill.

Best for

Accurate guidance when building on OpenAI products/APIs.

Hands-on test

  • test_level: fully-tested
  • Ran: yes
  • When: 2026-11-01T01:20:00+08:00 (Asia/Shanghai)
  • Result: Looked up platform.openai.com/docs/guides/text; raw urllib got 403, WebFetch succeeded; wrote ANSWER.md on Responses API preference.
  • Gotchas: Direct HTTP from some datacenter IPs is 403 — use a browser/WebFetch path.

Money-saving tip

Prefer ChatGPT Go ($8/mo US) or Plus ($20/mo) before Pro tiers; Business annual Standard seats are $20/user/mo vs $25 monthly. Nonprofit Standard seats: $8 annual / $10 monthly (help.openai.com).
